The scarf is a souvenir of a private commission I’ve been working on this year, executing wall paintings for a Roman cubiculum in the third style of Pompeii. The overall design of the room is generally adherent to those red and black Boscotrecase cubicula at the Metropolitan Museum. But my room contains an amalgamation of many Pompeiian references.
The satyrs on the scarves are inspired by a couple of fresco fragments I saw in the Archaeological Museum in Naples in March 2023. These frescoes were removed from the walls in (probably) the House of the Faun -- by Charles of Bourbon who was king of Naples in the mid 18th century and financed the early excavations of Pompeii. The balancing act in general has always struck me as relatable, and I liked these dancers in particular.
